The latest Deloitte Access Economics Health Survey has some alarming news: 39.8% of Australians don’t get enough sleep. The cost of this sleeplessness epidemic is a staggering 66.3 billion dollars. The direct cost to your business in productivity losses amounts to some $2418 per person.
What can you do to avoid the glazed eyes, slumped over the desk scenario amongst your team?
The report adds that this insomnia epidemic affected 7.4 million Australians in the past 12 months alone and that 394 Australians die each year in workplace accidents or while falling asleep at the wheel.
Professor Dorothy Bruck, one of the instigators of the report said that "sleep – or rather the lack of it – is a substantial burden on our economy and the livelihood of Australians, dampening mood, exacerbating health problems, dulling our productivity and making us a danger on the roads and in workplaces around the country".
The report had some recommendations to make, especially for those industries where shift work is tied to critical responsibilities. Regardless of the nature of your business, you need to reflect on how effectively your team is working.
There are so many little things you can do to encourage more alertness amongst your team, ranging from encouraging computer users to give their eyes regular breaks to ensuring that tasks are delegated fairly.
Are you asleep to your own well-being?
Likewise, take a good long look at your own work/sleep habits. Is your work activity impacting your sleep quality?
Are you trying to do too much? Are you willing to delegate responsibilities and stressful tasks to others? Are you willing to let go of some those things in order to have a better night’s sleep and to come to the office each day with that vibrant passion that got you started in the first place?
If you care about your team and your own well-being it’s time to think about how to improve and sustain a healthy working environment and culture in your business.
